Making Music – Jennifer Woodley ‘For in Him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, “We are his offspring.”’ Acts 17:28 (NIV).
A musical instrument is nothing without the fingers of the musician upon it. It cannot produce beautiful music on its own. However, under the loving touch of its owner the instrument comes alive, bringing pleasure to both the musician and all who listen.
And so it is with us. Alone we are nothing, yet in God’s hands we are everything. Beautiful music will flow from us as we surrender to the Master’s hand upon our lives. The Divine Master Craftsman understands the instruments of His design. He knows how to manage what He has made. The instrument does not say to the musician, ‘I can make music on my own. I do not need you.’ And yet we often believe we can say the same to God.
We are dependent upon God in the same way that an instrument depends upon the musician. We can try to make music, to make our lives something beautiful, but we need God’s guidance and loving grace to succeed. We are to be so surrendered to our God, that every breathe we take is dependent upon Him. When we open our hearts and allow the glory of God to shine through us, others will be drawn to the beautiful music He makes of our broken and far from perfect lives. What do we need to surrender to God just now?
‘Father, forgive me for trying to make something of my life without you. I surrender all of myself to you this day, trusting you will lead me well. Amen.’
