Make Much of Jesus – Toni M. Babcock
“Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
If you have yet to come to Jesus, don’t make too much of the means you use to get to Him— or anyone else’s means for that matter. In other words, don’t compare yourself with others. I once made that mistake.
A common trap for burdened souls seeking salvation and acceptance is the temptation to trust in a formula or an experience instead of trusting in Christ and His Word. It’s a stumbling block that hinders faith and quenches the Spirit.
Your testimony will be uniquely yours. “Calling upon the name of the Lord” shouldn’t require a particular script to follow (the thief on the cross didn’t follow a script) or require the need to replicate someone else’s salvation experience in order to ‘feel accepted.’
The Bible says “without faith it is impossible to please Him,” (Hebrews 11:6 NKJV). So, if you find yourself “calling upon Jesus” over and over just to be sure you called right — stop and ask yourself whether or not you’re making too much of the means and failing to take God at His Word. The good news is, we’re accepted in Christ because Christ was accepted on our behalf. Let it sink in and transform you. His sacrifice was accepted as enough — it’s 100 percent grace. We should accept Him as enough, too.
God looks at the heart and rewards faith. He promises eternal life when we believe the gospel — that Christ died for us and rose again to defeat sin and death, and lives to empower us to live a life pleasing to Him.
The love of God and the truth of the gospel gives us the will to confess we are sinners in need of a Savior so we’ll gladly receive Christ into our hearts by faith. I encourage you to do so today if you haven’t already.
