Living in Surreal Times – Toni Babcock Civil unrest, war, and political upheaval have been a part of the human experience for millennia. Add a pandemic to the mix and things can start to seem a little surreal.
Does your existence seem a bit unraveled right now? Perhaps you’re struggling to make ends meet, or you’re weary of the isolation and uncertainty of it all. You’re tired of the news, the political wrangling, the rioting in the streets and the tension that comes with it.
When things seem like they’re spiraling out of control it’s easy to wonder whether you’ll see anything good again. God’s Word records a similar complaint in the Psalms. “Many are asking, “Who can show us anything good?” Then the psalmist centers our attention on the one good thing we can see and look to — “Let the light of your face shine on us LORD,” (Psalm 4:6 CSB).
Yes, when there is nothing else good to see in the world, there is always this: “But we see Jesus…” Yes, we see Jesus who left his home in Heaven; Jesus, made a little lower than angels for a time in order to suffer and die; Jesus, crowned with glory and honor … Praise the Lord! “But we see Jesus…” (Hebrews 2:9 KJV).
Yes, there is a lot to keep us awake at night in these perilous times. But that’s all the more reason to keep our eyes on Jesus. The psalmist prayed to the LORD, “I will both lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, LORD, make me live in safety,” (Psalm 4:8 CSB).
