When Kris was in high school, she suddenly became very busy, so much so it was hard to stay in touch with her. Then she entered college, where she became even busier balancing class while working a part-time job. Once close to the Lord, her overloaded schedule seemed to be without room for God or church as she drifted away. The last time I saw her, she was hectically moving, heading to a job out of state.
Kris had become a workaholic and had anxiety problems. I believe she tried to escape the pain of her dysfunctional family and a mom with emotional issues by keeping too busy to feel or deal with anything. I can relate as my mom was an alcoholic who committed suicide when I was fourteen. It created a lot of struggle and anxiety in my life that I wanted to escape. Thankfully, in high school, I went to a group like Alateen. There, I learned that I could not run away from my problems. I needed to deal with them.
I also know that Kris struggled because her prayers for her mom were not answered as she hoped. Her mom just got worse. I understand her pain as a young person who also prayed for their mom to be healed to no avail. I believe this led Kris to turn away from God and avoid her feelings, never dealing with things. The problem is, unless we deal with our issues, they can chase and haunt us for the rest of our life.
I learned the hard way that the answer is not to run from God or our problems. Nor is it to get so busy we can no longer feel. I found the solution in giving all my cares and worries to the Lord even when my prayers remained unanswered. He always has my best interest at heart, even when I do not understand. He enabled me to trust Him when I turned to Him and He can do the same for you. I pray that Kris learned this truth and that you do too.
