Keep Your Eyes on Jesus – Marlene Custer
Throughout my childhood, my father often declared, “you can’t hit ‘em if you can’t see ‘em.” He was a baseball enthusiast and was quoting John McGraw, a Hall of Famer, who had lamented the fastball pitches of Amos Rosie. My father used the phrase to reinforce the idea of staying focused. If a batter doesn’t keep his eye on the ball, he will unlikely be able to hit it. The same applies to worthy goals. If we want to achieve, we must keep our focus on our goal. We cannot allow ourselves to get distracted by circumstances around us, or look at what someone else may be doing. We must keep our eyes ‘on the ball’!
As Christians, we have the goal of becoming more like Jesus. Scripture challenges us to be conformed to Christ’s image. If we want to be more like Jesus, then we must keep our eyes on Him. During this pandemic and all the turmoil, it is easy to focus on the uncertainties and our fears. But I challenge you to redirect your focus. Hebrews 12:2 says, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith...” The primary way we keep our focus on Jesus is through reading Scripture and studying His life. Also, we must be in communion with Him through prayer. Maintaining a focus on Jesus will not only make us more like Him, but we will also have His peace.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27 NIV
“Father, when I give in to worry and fear, please redirect my focus to Jesus. I want to keep my eyes on Him. Thank you for the peace that only You can give. Amen.”
