Just Pick the Fruit - John Custer
A lady professor at a seminary in the Philippines invited my wife and me to go to an island resort. We agreed, and soon we were on this beautiful island south of Manila. She arranged for us to do some snorkeling as the tour guide prepared a delicious meal on the beach. Sound like fun? It was.
Before leaving the resort that day, I jumped into the pool. The only person in the water was a Filipino lady who inquired where I worked in Manilla. After I told her that I worked at a seminary, she said, “So, are you a Christian?”
“Yes. I am. Are you?” I asked.
“No, but I have wanted to be a Christian ever since a relative told me about Jesus.”
I spent several minutes laying the foundation for accepting Christ, and then I called my wife to the side of the pool to witness her accepting Jesus as her Savior.
I have also shared the gospel with many who did not accept Christ and know never to be discouraged. Paul says in I Corinthian 3:6 (NIV), “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.” As one of my teachers said, “Maybe your job is to move the ball down the field a little bit.”
Only the Holy Spirit can convict the sinner and bring him into a relationship with Christ. So, don’t feel as if you have failed if they do not accept Christ immediately. When the Holy Spirit has been working in their life, you simply pick the fruit. But it is just as essential that we plant the seed and water it, or the fruit can never appear. The only way we can fail is by doing nothing. When you are instrumental in leading someone to Christ, it is an incomparable thrill!
