Jumping Ahead of God – Tricia Draper He said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.” Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you.” 2 Samuel 7:2-3 (NIV)
David had riches and a wonderful palace, while the tabernacle was placed in a tent. This didn’t seem right to David, so he mentioned to the Prophet Nathan that he wanted to build a great place for God. This sounded reasonable and like a noble idea, so Nathan agreed. However, Nathan had not asked God if this is what He wanted.
We read on and find out that God didn’t have this in mind for David at all. Nathan and David had jumped ahead of God. We can easily find ourselves in this same situation, doing what we think is right, without asking God if that is His will. In the end, the results won’t be from God and we may have to redo things His way. Hopefully this will teach us to always seek God’s will first. As David learned, it is very worth it in the end.
Thankfully, when we read all of 2 Samuel Chapter 7, we find the story of God’s covenant with David, continuing his line forever. Even though David failed at times, God knew David’s heart and ended up making a covenant that was unbreakable with him. This is a great promise that is true for us today, because Jesus was from the line of David.
