Pressed for any answer that made political sense, Pontius Pilate asked Jesus “Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?” (John 19:10 NKJV) Jesus, dripping blood from his thorn crowned brow, looked directly into Pilate’s eyes and answered, “You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above…” (John 19:11 NKJV)
This answer was so wonderfully Jesus. It’s what we love about his ability to cut through the noise and speak truth to power. But notice the position Jesus took in order to speak the truth with maximum effect. He took the form of a servant and humbled himself—even to the death of the cross (Philippians 2:7-8 KJV). After all, this was a day of salvation for mankind, not a day of bludgeoning his enemies with a cudgel. Jesus was confident he was a winner in His Father’s eyes even though Pilate may have thought he was a loser.
In the world Jesus stayed clear of compromising entanglements. He “knew what was in man,” (John 2:24-25 KJV) and stayed true to himself. “My kingdom is not of this world,” (John 18:36 KJV), he told Pilate. Unlike Jesus, we tend to cement our loyalties in life and takes sides to the point of compromising who we are. Do you know someone who ‘went off the deep end’ because they weren’t discerning enough to see what was behind the person they decided to give their allegiance to? Unfortunately, it happens.
We just need to follow Jesus. That’s all. Just learn to live like Jesus and share the good news of the gospel come what may—just like Him.
