Is Your Light On? - Jane H. Young
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lamp-stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven." Matthew 5: 14-16 NASB
I once heard a story about a lineman on a train. One night there was a wreck at the crossroads and the lineman was called in for questioning. They asked him if he had been working the crossroads that night and he said yes. Did you have a lantern? Yes. Did you wave it? Yes. After thanking him, they let him go. But as he left, he was overheard saying. I am glad they never asked if my lantern was lit because it wasn't.
Since Jesus said, we are the light of the world. We must ask ourselves, is our lantern lit, or are we no help in the darkness because the light of Christ in us is not shining for others to see? Just speaking a kind word to someone that is having a bad day could give them a ray of hope that things might not be as bad as they thought. This may be the first time that person has seen the love of Jesus in action.
You might say, does my one light really make all that much difference? Try going in a completely dark room and striking one match and see how much difference one little light makes. So, my answer to you is yes. Can you imagine how much of the world's darkness we could drive out if each one of us turned our little light on?
As I go about my day, Lord help me be the light in someone's dark world, letting them see your love through my words and actions. Help me to be bold and also share the gospel whenever I can. Amen
