Is There Such A Thing as Happily Ever After? Sandra Fischer “So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead. . .” 1 Peter 1:6a NIV
The Hallmark channel is popular with many romanticists who spend hours watching the movies they air. Every movie’s story endings are predictable, implicit with the idea that the couple who kiss at the end will live happily ever after. Is there such a thing? Yes and no. For us Christians, as members of God’s family in His eternal kingdom, we have everlasting joy—good news—but not always experienced in the here and now, not so good news. The second part of the verse quoted from 1 Peter above ends with this reality check: “. . . even though you have to endure many trials for a little while.” 1 Peter 1:6b NIV
And, Jesus tells his followers that trouble is a given: “In the world you will have tribulation. And then he follows with the good news, “. . . but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NKJV
Paul’s letter to Timothy has a similar promise for believers: “In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. . .But continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of. . . the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 3:12, 14a, 15b NIV
For us Christians, our earthly journey is underscored with everlasting joy, but for those who have not accepted Christ’s substitutionary death, burial and resurrection for salvation, there is no “happily ever after” at all, unless they do.
“LORD, I pray for those who do not know you to come to faith, so they can spend eternity with you, happy ever after.”
