Is Service to Others Your Product? Robert Schaetzle “Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.” 2 Corinthians 4:1, 5 RSV
All 40 years I worked in Civil Service for the government, my product was ‘service.’ Now retired from that vocation, I pursue my career by serving the Lord, my product still ‘service.’
Yesterday, I spent 2 ½ hours waiting for my turn at our local Department of Motor Vehicles to renew my driver’s license. [Yes, I passed my test.] While there, I sat next to a lady and took the opportunity to ask her how long she had been waiting. We both shared about our family’s, and she shared a concern she had about her children and caring for her aged mother and mother-in-law. Our conversation, opened the door for me to bring up the topic of my faith in God, by sharing how thankful I am that He has kept me mentally alert and strong enough to keep on driving. The blessing came when we both recognized and encouraged the part ‘faith’ played in our homes. She shared with me the fellowship she attended, that I recognized, and how the presence of God gives her purpose to her challenges.
How blessed we are to recognize God’s prompting to serve, by speaking to and encouraging strangers we’ll probably never see again. I have been truly blessed through my senior years when I purposefully reach out to others and share the ‘Good News’ of walking by faith. God has the same blessing waiting for you too.
