| | | | | How to Not be Overcome by Evil Michael Edwards
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Rom 12:21 BSB
The spirit of evil does not overcome us through evil actions done by others. Evil overcomes us when it leads us to retaliate in kind. When our flesh feels attacked, it naturally wants revenge. This can be large or as small as being cut off in traffic and retaliating. The Holy Spirit states that when we fall prey to the temptation to strike back in any manner, evil has overcome us and is using us to further overcome the world.
In the Greek (Strong's 3528), the word overcome is defined: to conquer, prevail - Usage: I conquer, am victorious, overcome, prevail, subdue.
If we look at Jesus' life and death, we see that He sincerely loved His persecutors, even though He detested and came to defeat the evil that had overcome them. Jesus did not perpetuate evil by retaliating in kind. He defeated evil with good. God's higher way, the only way to victory.
Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil; cling to what is good. Rom 12:9 BSB
We are ambassadors of God, not evil. While not easy, we can do God's will and overcome evil like Jesus. Meditate on these words and imagine a world where all Christians responded like Jesus:
Bless those who persecute you. Bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but enjoy the company of the lowly. Do not be conceited.
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone.
Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God's wrath. For it is written: "Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord." On the contrary, "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. For in so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head."
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Rom 12:14-21 BSB
Father, much of this world is overcome by evil, help us to walk by faith in the Spirit so that the fruits of the Spirit, overcome evil with good. Amen
