How the Light Gets In – Toni Babcock

“My heart races, my strength leaves me, and even the light of my eyes has faded,” (Psalm 38:10 CSB).

It’s never helpful to make judgments about people who are wounded or broken by assuming anything other than what they already know is true.
People know themselves far better than we do—they generally just don’t want to talk about it. So why do we sometimes find ourselves talking about how they got to where they are?

Pontificating about other people’s mistakes, only risks speculating about questions we’re not qualified to answer.

None of us are God. We don’t really know why people make choices that end up affecting their lives in negative ways. We don’t know what daily torments affect their mind or fog their vision.

Pontificating is often used to justify ourselves in having nothing to do with the sufferer, or makes us expect them to rally the power to transform themselves without any moral support.

That’s not the Jesus way. Jesus was constantly involved in the lives of the wounded and broken. He knew there could be no transformation without His mercy and grace.

That’s why I’m glad for Psalm 38. The psalm in its entirety, helps me understand the torment of a guilty conscience and recognize the burden of a broken heart. It confirms that none of us are immune to making serious mistakes in life—but we can all take refuge in the love and grace of a merciful God—the God who has brought Himself near enough for us to trust Him.

To quote Ernest Hemingway, “We are all broken. That’s how the light gets in.”

"Hi Michael, I was given a copy by a friend about two years ago when I told them I didn’t believe but had an encounter with what I now know was the Holy Spirit prior to reading the book. After reading your book, and being that I’m a cop, the evidence was compelling so the choice became easy. Thank you for being a big part of saving my life and seeing the truth about Jesus. My life has drastically changed for the better!!! I’ve handed out many of your books already, and can hardly wait to give more away! Thank you sir!! And God bless!"
