Harnessed To Our Sin – Cheryl Weber
I live where Amish and Old Order Mennonite horse-drawn buggies are a common sight. Sometimes I pity the horses, all harnessed up, bits in their mouths, sweating, waiting in all sorts of weather for their humans to finish church, shopping, visiting, etc.
Isaiah 5:18 compares bondage to sin to pulling a heavy wagon behind us. “What sorrow for those who drag their sins behind them with ropes made of lies, who drag wickedness behind them like a cart!” In Genesis 4:6-7, God compares the power of sin to an evil creature that wants to control us and in John 8:34, Jesus said, “Everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.”
It is said that it takes twenty-one days to turn a behavior into a habit. Repeated, deliberate sin becomes not just a bad habit, but slavery and it opens us up to captivity to the enemy. Studies have also shown that addictions to alcohol and drugs actually change the structure of the brain so that the addicted person is driven to seek a high; they are not simply weak or unwilling to practice self-control but are unable to.
Christ alone can set us free (John 8:36). When we yield our lives and hearts to the Lord in true repentance, he makes us into new creations with transformed hearts and minds that want to do the right thing out of love for him (John 14:15). He makes us holy and begins the process of perfecting us (Hebrews 10:14). We will still sin, but we have the Holy Spirit within us to give us power over our carnal nature.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank you that because of Jesus’s sacrificial death, we are free from sin and by the power of your Holy Spirit, we can have continued victory. Amen.
