Happy Heart - Marlene Custer
Recently I visited a circus museum. One of the highlights was a video clip of a clown applying his makeup. He was a happy-face clown. Making people laugh was his specialty. The meticulous skill he exhibited, putting on his face paint, was fascinating. He began with a foundation color that was slightly tanner than his natural skin color. Next, he chose white, red, and black, and the colors had to be applied in that order. The fine lines that accented and separated the colors took a remarkably steady hand. One of the interesting facts was that only his bottom lip was accentuated. To exaggerate the top lip would create a distortion. When he finally finished applying the paint, fine powder was dusted over all to keep the makeup from smearing. A huge red nose, a wig, and a headband completed the appearance of being happy and carefree.
Watching this transformation brought to mind the verse of Scripture in Proverbs that says, “A happy heart makes the face cheerful...” How often we are guilty of trying to make our faces look happy when inside we are anything but cheerful. It is not paint or pretending that makes our faces display true happiness. We must make sure our heart is right with God first, then our face will exhibit a real joyfulness.
Another verse in Proverbs declares, “A cheerful heart is good medicine...” Seek to know God, through his Word, and your cheerful heart will put the smile on your face!
“Father, please fill my heart with your love and joy, so that my face shines with the happiness that only you can give no matter what is happening in my life.”
