Giants and Grasshoppers – Jennifer Woodley
‘Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, ‘We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.’ But the men who had gone up with him said, ‘We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.’ Numbers 13:30-31 (NIV).
Some see obstacles, some see opportunities. Some see giants and some see grasshoppers. Our victory or defeat depends on how we see the circumstances before us and how we see ourselves. The men sent to spy out the Promised Land saw themselves as grasshoppers and the people who occupied that land as giants. This shrinking back because of a false perception of themselves and their circumstances was an example of their unbelief, which kindled the anger of God (Hebrews 3:17).
But as Paul declares in Hebrews 10:39, ‘But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.’ Today we are challenged to see ourselves not as grasshoppers, able to be conquered and crushed by our circumstances and all manner of difficulty that our enemy would attempt to throw against us. We are called instead to possess the land, which in the New Testament is the spiritual inheritance of the life of Christ within each of us. In Christ, we are no longer grasshoppers, but giants, able to live fully in the explosive power of Christ that infuses through each of us. The power that helps us to conquer every difficulty and possess our ‘Promised Land.’
