Giants - Marlene Custer
My earliest recollections of giants were from the stories of Jack and the Beanstalk and David and Goliath. When hearing both stories, I could almost feel the ground tremble and their voices thunder. Listening to their escapades started my heart beating faster.
As a school-age child, I remember the circus coming to town and one of the side-show attractions was a real giant. He was somewhere between 7 feet 6 inches and 8 feet tall. His purpose was for entertainment, amusing onlookers with the size of his shoes, how small a ‘normal-sized’ person looked standing next to him, and other such trivia.
As years rolled by, James and the Giant Peach and The Incredible Hulk grabbed my attention. Being older and wiser, they were more entertaining than scary.
The word ‘giants’ can also refer to difficult circumstances, like marital problems, mounting home repairs, a job in jeopardy, or a menacing virus. Like giants, our problems can seem huge, over-powering, and daunting.
Are you facing a circumstance that is a giant to you? I encourage you to grab your Bible and check out Psalm 27:6-7. The Psalmist declares, “For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe...and set me high upon a rock. Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me.” If I am high above my enemies, they are not nearly as intimidating.
Paul reminds us that no matter what we face, “we are more than conquerors through him who loved us...”. Nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God!
