Firmly Rooted - Karen Pourbabaee “But his delight is in the law of the Lord. And in His law he meditates day and night. And he will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water. Which yields its fruit in its season. And its leaf does not wither. And whatever he does, he prospers.” Psalm 1:2-3 NAB
We must be firmly rooted to withstand the droughts and adversities of life or we will literally wither away. How important is developing strong roots? From the parable of the sower, “And when the sun rose, it was scorched and withered for lack of roots.” (Mark 4:6) Pretty important. Every gardener knows the fragility of new plantings. Downpours of rain and excessive winds may loosen the struggling root systems. So might scampering squirrels or little foxes (Song of Solomon 2:15).
How do we become firmly rooted? By abiding in the Lord, the Living Word. By delighting in His Law—the Word of God—and meditating on it day and night, according to Psalm 1. As we take in the Word as nourishment, we will grow stronger and longer roots in order to stand in adversity. Our goal? “That they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.” (Isaiah 61:3)
As a new creation in Christ, we are His plantings and must become rooted in Him. “…live in vital union with Him. Let your roots grow down into Him and draw up nourishment from Him. See that you go on growing in the Lord, and become strong and vigorous in the truth you were taught. Let your lives overflow with joy and thanksgiving for all He has done.” (Colossians 2:6-7 LB) As we do so, we will bear fruit in its season and in whatever we do, we shall prosper and He shall be glorified. Amen.
