Faith Over Fear - Karen Pourbabaee “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Mathew 8:26 NAB
We all know the story--how the windstorm arose on the Sea of Galilee, catapulting the disciple’s fishing boat upon the waves. All the while, Jesus was sleeping peacefully. At their call, He answered their plea: “Lord, save us!” But not before both rebuking them and proclaiming a great principle of faith: “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?”
From Jesus’ proclamation, we learn that fear and faith are essentially opposites. As Peter began to doubt, he began to sink. As he took his eyes off Christ, the waves overwhelmed him. But fixing his eyes on Jesus brought arising faith for the rescue. We are not to be afraid as the storms roll in.
God’s Word tells us again and again not to fear. One example is found in Isaiah 41:10: “Fear not, I am with you; do not be dismayed; I am your God.” In another translation, it reads, “Do not look anxiously about you.” (NASB) The Amplified Bible states: “Do not look around you in terror and be dismayed.”
Notice how anxiety, terror, and dismay come from looking about you? No matter what the storm, Jesus is nearby. You can call on Him. He is ready to save. Storms are inevitable, seemingly sporadic, but known by the Lord. He is never surprised. Be comforted in this--storms pass like the ebb and flow of the seasons. Each storm ends. Remain hopeful, for God has dominion over all the storms of your life. Do not fear. Allow your faith to arise and stretch out your hand, for your rescue is imminent. Your faith is greater than your fear.
