Excel in Giving – Jennifer Woodley “But just as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” 2 Corinthians 8:7 (NIV)
This is a high calling. As people who are devoted to Christ, our behavior, especially in the matters mentioned by Paul, must excel, or surpass others. This is not because we want to look better than others, but because we want to imitate Christ. Christ, the One who gave unconditionally expecting nothing in return. Christ, the One who gave over and above, beyond measure, so that all humanity might overflow beyond measure with blessings.
Followers of Christ are to do the same: to go the extra mile. Luke expounds upon this. “If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.” Luke 6:29-30 (NIV).
Followers of Christ can excel because He equips us to do the same. The Lord of Heaven has poured out upon us the full measure of the spiritual riches of Heaven so that we are enabled, with all the spiritual power at our command, to emulate Christ’s excellent example and to follow in His footsteps. To excel as He has done.
Father, help me to give to others, to give in humility, in love, in compassion. Open my eyes to the need and remind me that no matter the size or significance, I am giving Christ. Thank you.
