Enough is Never Enough – Jennifer Woodley ‘And he said to them, “Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.”’ Luke 12:15 (NRSV)
Owning more will never make us more. Growing bigger homes or larger bank accounts may bolster our pride, but in God’s eyes this amounts to nothing. The meaning of our lives is not found in the abundance of what we own. Instead, it is found in the depth of our relationship with Jesus.
Greed shouts loudly and persistently “Gather more!” However, Jesus says “Give more!” As we surrender ourselves obediently to Him and give ourselves in humble service to others, only then will we find the richest contentment and reward.
Jesus referred to the wealthy landowner, whose possessions so overflowed from his barns that he was left wondering where to store more. Jesus called the man a fool as he sought to trust in his riches and fill up his life with everything but God.
Let’s be alert and guard our hearts from yearning for more of what we don’t have. Will that new shiny toy really satisfy us and how long before our eyes wander after something else? Proverbs 27:20 reminds us that ‘Hell and Destruction are never filled and the desires of men’s hearts are insatiable.’ Let’s be known as lovers of God, not lovers of the world’s enticements.
‘Father forgive me for being deceived by the allurements of the world that have had a hold on me. Remind me that I am enriched not by what I own, but rather by knowing you. Amen.’
