Elusive Peace - Marlene Custer
Walking through the neighborhood, I was aware of the blue sky, fluffy white clouds, warm sun and beautiful flowers. Life seemed perfect, and I was praising God.
Then, my revelry was abruptly interrupted by the sound of a ferocious bark and the sight of a territorial dog rushing towards me. My peace dissipated like a fresh snowflake on a sun-drenched roof. Should I run? Ha! A face-plant waiting to happen! Should I just give up in quiet surrender? In my weakness at that moment, I spoke the name of Jesus.
What I didn’t see when that dog rushed towards me was the invisible fencing around his yard. He could come so far, and no further. As I realized this, my heart rate slowed, and I immediately felt sweet peace wash over me.
My thoughts flew to two passages of Scripture. The Apostle Peter admonished early believers to “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you…” (1 Peter 5:7 NIV). Likewise, David in the Psalms declares, “The Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in Him.” (Psalm 32:10 NIV)
In the Christian life there will be times when I feel strong and experience unspeakable peace, but then suddenly that peace may be shattered by an unforeseen calamity, and I am consumed with anxiety. That’s when I must remember that I am His and His love surrounds me. Evil can come so close and no further.
“Jesus, thank you for your Word that brings me peace and comfort. Help me to remember that your strength is far greater than any challenge I may face. You are deserving of all my praise! Amen.”
