Boundless Love – Darlene Edmondson “I will not forget you because I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands” (Isa 49:16 NIV)
At heart, we all yearn to be accepted. Yet, loneliness affects the lives of so many people in all age groups. Even temporary isolation can produce detrimental effects on one’s mental and physical health. By peeking into the life of Rev. Dr. George Matheson, we discover a compelling ‘story-song’ of hope and restoration over loneliness.
During his twentieth year, Dr. Matheson’s entire life was radically altered when he became totally blind. Years before this happened, he had been engaged, but when his fiancé learned he would one day be blind, she ended the engagement. In addition, his own sister’s marriage seemed to magnify the pain of Matheson’s intense loneliness.
Yet, he looked heavenward and penned the meaningful hymn, ‘O Love That Will Not Let Me Go.’ If we ponder this glorious hymn, we learn that Matheson learned from his pain that pure loves ultimate source is God. Love consists not in our loving God, but in His initiative to first love the world. To that end, He sent His only Son as the full payment for the wrongdoings of all humanity. God’s ultimate goal is for lost sinners to accept His love and then display that same love toward others.
God’s undying love, combined with our maturing love, assures us that we are right with God. This perfected love casts out loneliness and refuses to tolerate fear.
“Even though weeping may endure through the night, joy comes with the morning” (Psalm 30:5b)
Dear Father, grant us an inward affection that leads to self-giving. May we abound in mercy and forgiveness toward others as You help us to experience Your boundless love’ Amen.
