Back to the Drawing Board - Gloria Pierre Dean The fruit cake recipe asked for flour, sugar, eggs, baking powder, and a tin of minced fruit soaked in wine. With pleasure, I began the process of making the cake, adding all the ingredients until I opened the tin. How disappointing! I had not noticed the puncture in the tin.
All the liquid had drained out, and the fruit was dry and cracked. It was no longer suitable to use. ‘A can of worms, I thought, certainly not good fruit! Momentarily, tears welled up in my eyes. I had to make a quick trip to the supermarket and buy a new tin which I inspected carefully this time.
The cake story took me to another incident that happened in the life of a friend. Her name was Jill, and she had met this ‘great guy’ at work. He took an interest in her and became her handsome suitor. His name was Jonas. They hung out together, and gradually she developed a plan in her heart. “We would make a great pair, like a perfect cake,” she mused to herself.
He not only looked good, but he was friendly, well-liked, educated, and owned his apartment. A recipe for a perfect husband, but Jill knew in her heart that she had to look deeper. She had to open the ‘can.’ Wisdom demanded that she add one more vital ingredient, which was faith in Christ. Jonas was not a Christian. Over time, as he opened his heart to her, she realised that he was an atheist.
As a child, she had grown up in a Christian home and went to church frequently, had given her life to the Lord and learned this verse.
‘Do not be unequally yoked to unbelievers’ {2 Corinthians 3:14 NIV}
Even though she had strayed somewhat into a backslidden lifestyle, Jill knew she could not marry Jonas if she wanted to be happy. She repented and spent time praying. She knew this ‘can of worms’ had to be thrown away.
‘Back to the drawing board,’ she thought. The only fix for this was separation. It was a ‘no go.’
Jill prayed, “Father, I thank you that you have a God-fearing partner for me. I will wait on you.”
No matter what decision lies before us, if always goes better when we wait upon the Lord.
