And So Did His Disciples - Karen Pourbabaee
“Jesus rose and followed him, and so did His disciples.” Matthew 9:19 NAB
Jesus was on the verge of another miracle, that of raising the synagogue leader’s daughter from death. The newly recruited disciples of the Lord had much to learn about Jesus and His divine mission. So they followed Him to the young girl’s deathbed, and many other places thereafter. We are to do likewise. Jesus pronounced it many times:
At the calling of His first disciples, Peter and Andrew, Jesus urged: “Come after Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matt. 4:19) At once they dropped their nets and followed. We are to do likewise. What worldly things are you holding onto that you need to drop so you may follow the Lord?
When we accept His call on our lives, we also take the role of servant. “Whoever serves Me must follow Me, and where I am there also will My servant be.” (John 12:26) A servant follows his master. We are to do likewise.
The call to follow Jesus was never promised to be easy; the call comes with a condition. “Then He said to all, ‘If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” (Luke 9:23) The original twelve sacrificed to follow Jesus through hardships and persecutions. We are to do likewise.
Today we do not physically walk with Jesus. Yet, He is our Lord, our Master, and Teacher. We are to honor Him and serve Him. We have much to learn from this Rabbi of old, therefore we must listen for His voice that leads us. (John 10:27) Where would you see Jesus go in today’s world, in your personal sphere? Are you ready to follow Him there? Be prepared to go wherever He may lead!
