ARE YOU LOST YET? – Robert Schaetzle
“And he said to all, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake, he will save it,” (Luke 9:23-24 RSV).
There comes a moment in our walk of faith when we come to recognize ‘losing’ something is a good thing. I’m not talking about misplacing or losing a keepsake or something else precious, or a loved one who has departed to be with the Lord. I’m talking about times when we lose the confidence we put in the flesh in order to put our hope and confidence in Jesus.
I remember walking home from visiting a cousin who lived two or three miles from home when I was a boy of about nine or ten years-old. My youthful confidence told me… ‘I can do this; I don’t need someone to drive me home.’ It was getting dark, but I believed I had plenty of time to get home before it got too dark to make my way safely. In the end I had to stop at a neighbor’s house to call home and get help.
New life in Jesus requires we lose our confidence in the ‘flesh’ and turn to Christ to safely guide us home to Heaven. We lose “our way” to find “His Way.” Losing our way means surrendering our self-will in order to find something better in the power of God’s preeminence. Jesus described this new life to a man named Nicodemus when he talked about the ‘new birth.’ Read about it here: (John 3:16-18 KJV). There is indeed much to gain when we understand new life in Jesus, and the power of God’s saving presence to show us the Way.
Father, show us how to lose our life to find it in Jesus…. AMEN.
