A Conversation Between Pete and Tom Harriett Ford “Come on Tom, grab your cloak and your staff. Let’s go! You know what the Lord said when He appointed seventy-two others and sent them ahead two by two.” Thomas hesitates. “Yeah, He told us to 'Heal the sick and tell them, the kingdom of God is near you. Can we really heal the sick, Pete?"(Luke 10:9).”
“We can do whatever He told us to do!” Peter grins.
On the street, they meet a crippled beggar. Peter asks, "Sir, do you want to be healed?"
The fellow says, "I am unworthy. I'm a sinner."
Thomas looks at Peter doubtfully: "Shouldn't we ask, Father if it be Thy will, please heal this sinner?"
Peter is astonished. "Come on Tom! Did you ever hear Jesus, ask even once, Father is it Your will for this person to be made whole?"
"You're right, Pete. We should pray, but what if nothing happens?"
Peter rolls his eyes. Turning to the cripple, he says, "In the name of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, rise up and walk!"
The pair watch as the beggar rises to his feet. At first his legs wobble, then he takes a few haltering steps. Soon he is leaping and walking and praising God. And so are Peter and Thomas.
(Actually, it was Peter and John in the book of Acts 3: 5. I used Thomas as the character in this fictional story to make a point.)
I know what you're thinking. That kind of authority was for the apostles only. Think again. Jesus said these signs would follow those that believe (Mark 16: 17-18). That's you and me.
