“We must forgive our abusers” by Lynn Gipson

Luke 23:34–Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.

After being betrayed by Judas, beaten, tortured, nailed to a cross and humiliated, Jesus asked the Father to forgive His abusers. How could anyone ever forgive such horrid people? Only Jesus Christ. Instead of asking the Holy Father to condemn His abusers and murderers, He asked for His forgiveness of them, because they did not know what they were doing.

Do we ask the same thing towards people who have hurt us? If we live in Christ we should, but we don’t always have the ability to do that. We feel our pain, anger and resentment towards our abusers. I know I have even asked for justice. Sometimes justice seemingly came, but I was still left with my own self destructive inner feelings.

It is only when we completely surrender our lives and wills to Jesus Christ and ask Him to give us the courage and strength to forgive others that we find peace within.

It is certainly a work in progress, but every day I ask Jesus to take the hurt away and He does. If Jesus can forgive all that was done to him and ask the Father in heaven to forgive His enemies, so must we. We do that only by the grace of God, for only He has the power to heal our hearts and set us free. God Bless.
