"Then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; go away from me, you evildoers.'" (Matthew 7:23, NRSV)
It is actually better to do nothing, rather than great feats that are not part of God's will. Matthew 7:21-23 condemns those who do good deeds in God's name, but are not part of His purpose for their lives. Obedience to God's will is what counts, nothing else. Good deeds in His name done in disobedience are not good and pleasing to Him at all.
How confronting! How many acts of greatness, without God's approval have been attempted, all for the sake of His name? God sees these as evil and wants nothing to do with them. He is only interested in humble, obedient service.
Hearing from God is all that matters. Doing what He asks is all that counts. Let it be said of us on that final day, "Well done, my good and faithful servant," because we have listened, because we have obeyed.
Consider your areas of life ministry just now. What is of your own doing and what is clearly led and provided for by God? Have a conversation with your Heavenly Father about what does and does not please Him. What is and is not done in obedience? What is God asking you to lay down?
