The Martyr-Hero Complex - Toni Babcock
"…The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of thee…" (I Corinthians 12:21a KJV).
In the body of Christ, it's important not to assign a feeling of worthlessness to others, while assuming a secret attitude of pride in ourselves. A curious method of achieving this end can be described as a "martyr-hero complex".
How can we know we are edging toward becoming one? The martyr-hero is most satisfied when he or she is in complete control; doing much, and delegating little. When the project is short-staffed, and team-members appear on the scene to pick up the slack, the martyr-hero will have already been there prior to anyone's knowledge, with almost everything done. He or she may appear somewhat ambivalent, even annoyed when others attempt to step in and finish the job. One might conclude that martyr-heroes have to be martyrs, and they have to be heroes. Other members of the team are simply unwanted competition.
It's quite possible the martyr-hero grew up being constantly put down, or disregarded. A sibling may have always stolen the lime-light. Displaying a martyr-hero complex just might be an unconscious quest for the approval they never got in life.
Dear God, we cannot afford to live as wounded children grasping for approval. Remind us we are loved and approved of in Christ. May we take delight in other people's gifts and abilities. Show us how to forget about our broken selves, and encourage others to fulfill their God given roles within the body of Christ.
