Walking in His Light by Susan Barnes
But now, all you who light fires and provide yourselves with flaming torches, go, walk in the light of your fires and of the torches you have set ablaze. This is what you shall receive from my hand: You will lie down in torment. Isaiah 50:11
So what's wrong with lighting our own fires? When we walk in the light of our own fire we aren't walking in the light God has provided. 1 John 1:7 tells us to walk in the light as he is in the light. So this verse in Isaiah refers to our tendency to live our lives our way, instead of seeking God's direction.
Our sense of independence makes it difficult for us to be guided by God. We like doing things our way. His ways aren't what we would normally choose - to be loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, honest, faithful, gentle and self-controlled - regardless of the circumstances. We can only live like this if we have his enabling.
Unfortunately if we are seeking to live our lives our way we are, "lighting our own fires" and this brings us to the solemn warning, "You will lie down in torment". Not because God is being hard to get along with but because he has made us to find our fulfilment in following him. God's desires to bless us and show us favour but he knows the only way for us to be happy is to live our lives in dependency on him.
