Recently, I noticed a "weed" growing under our arbor. Imagine my surprise a few weeks later when a beautiful sunflower appeared. Since I had not planted sunflower seeds I accepted the large, bright, flower as a gift from God, one that not only added beauty to the yard but taught a lesson.
As I gazed at the sunflower, I noticed that the larger it became the more its stem turned downward so that the flower which had once faced upward now had a view of the ground. That is when God used his creation to teach. As a new Christian we stand proud with our faces turned toward heaven, but often as time marches on the weight of life's trials can turn us toward the world; such as the weight of the bloom curved the sunflower downward.
It is at this time in our lives that we need to turn our faces back to the one who loves us (John 3:16), provides for us (Matthew 6: 31-32), and will never forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6). God our Father created and planted us where He desires us to be, just like He did the sunflower. As I gaze at the magnificent bloom I am reminded of a hymn, "Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace."
Dear Lord, thank You for reminding me to look up to You! In Jesus' name, Amen.
