Rightly Dividing the Word - Harriett Ford
The most terrifying words a person could ever hear are: "Depart from me, I never knew you, you workers of iniquity." Matt. 7: 21-23 NIV
Therefore, the most important question a person can ever ask is: "What must I do to have eternal life?" Matt. 19:16-22
The rich young ruler received an answer that surprises people schooled in the repent-confess-be-baptized steps to salvation. Jesus instructed the ruler to obey the commandments.
Lord, this is different from Romans 10:8-10, which simply states that we must believe with our hearts that Jesus is Your Son raised from the dead and confess it with our mouths. Why?
I then realized the cross is the difference, the dividing line between the Old and New Testaments. After the Cross, people received salvation by faith in the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. Paul and Silas did not burden the jailer with burdensome laws, Acts 16: 29-31. He fell down trembling before them, asking, "What must I do to be saved?" They answered, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved and your whole household."
Think of this. The first miracle Moses performed was turning water to blood which led to death. The first miracle Jesus performed was turning water into wine, a symbol of joy and the Holy Spirit leading to life.
Three thousand people died when Moses threw the stone tablets to the ground. Three thousand people were born again on the day Peter first preached Christ Resurrected.
Father, You redeemed me while I was yet in sin. The law of the Spirit of life has set me free from the law of sin and death! Thank You for showing me to rightly divide the Word, 2 Tim. 2: 15. O the difference!
