The Lord Doesn't Change by Susan Barnes "I the Lord do not change." Malachi 3:6 Everything changes, except God. I once thought that this meant God was predictable. I've since learnt that God has never been predictable. God has always been full of surprises. In the Old Testament we find a talking donkey, a talking bush, boat building miles from water, even battles won with a horn. Yet his unchanging desire has been to have a people who were "without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish" (Ephesians 5:27). I read this comment by Jean Church on a desk calendar: "God is changeless. He will be unusual, He won't strike an average anywhere. He will get out of bounds and meet us on any level with His patience and His love and His bounty." This quote appealed to me because this has also been my experience of God. He gets outside my self-imposed boundaries. I've tried to keep God in certain areas of my life. Those areas that were acceptable and spiritual and I have tried to keep him out of other areas. It didn't work. I discovered that God doesn't have categories marked spiritual and secular, he insisted on being Lord of all. Yet through this, I learnt of his unchanging love. I once felt comforted by the unchanging nature of God. Now I see it as a challenge because it means he will continue to do surprising things. He will continue to "get out of bounds" in my life and yours until he has a "radiant church". Susan, an Australian pastor's wife, regularly writes devotional thoughts on Bible passages, book reviews and inspirational articles. Contact |
