The Good Shepherd by Susan Barnes
"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep". John 10:11
Jesus is referred to as the great shepherd (Hebrews 13:20), the chief shepherd (1 Peter 5:4) and here he is the good shepherd. What does it mean for us when Jesus calls himself the good shepherd?
In the Garden of Eden the serpent implies that if God was good he would not stop Adam and Eve from having what they wanted. This is a lie that the devil has repeated again and again, that if God is good, he would never say no to his children.
However as parents, we wouldn't dream of giving our children everything they ask for, or allow them to do everything they want to do, because we have their best interests at heart. We know that sometimes the most loving thing parents can say to their children is "no". We must not forget we are God's children and he knows what is best for us.
Another lie of the devil is a good God would stop suffering. Here we need to remember the second part of the verse, "the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep". God allowed his own Son to suffer and die for our benefit. While we may not understand all of God's ways, we cannot doubt that his intentions towards us are always good.
When we are tempted to doubt God's goodness we simply remember the cross. It is the absolute demonstration of God's good intent towards us. No matter what happens, God is good and Jesus is our good shepherd.
