The Apostle Peter describes what characterizes the believer (II Peter 1:5-9 KJV), saying he who is lacking these things, "has forgotten he was purged from his old sins". Sadly, we are much more inclined to remember our sins than remember Jesus!
Now consider God: (Psalm 103:12 KJV) (Isaiah 44:22 KJV) and (Hebrews 8:12 KJV). When God chooses to forget our sin, he really forgets. And you can be sure of this: He'll never forget Jesus.
God gave us a tool to remember the sacrifice of Christ on our behalf. It's why we celebrate communion. It's not to remind God what Jesus has done for us, but to remind ourselves! Being reconciled to God through the blood of Christ (Romans 5:8-10 KJV ) we see communion not as a tool to appease an angry God, or a strategy to convince a reluctant God to forgive us, but as a gift. Remembering Christ's sacrifice on the cross, we place ourselves in a position where we can present our bodies as a living sacrifice for God out of gratitude for what He has accomplished for us, (Romans 12:1-2 KJV).
How blessed we are to continually apply the finished work of Christ to our conscience with the help of the Holy Spirit, as the scriptures remind us, "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for He is faithful that promised," (Hebrews 10:22 KJV .)
Dear God, may our hope in You be one that expresses full assurance; not the fear and anxiety of uncertainty. Turn our doubts into a living faith, believing the great things Jesus has done for us.
