"This is the day which the Lord has made…" Psalm 118:24 NAS
We journey dad by day in days which our Lord has made. They are strung together by His grace, attended by His angels, and guided by His Spirit, creating the fullness of our lives which is written in His book. What are we to do with this gift of days allotted? The words of an ancient prayer, revived in the 1971 Godspell production, are held close to my heart:
"Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits Thou hast given me, for all the pains and insults Thou hast borne for me. O most merciful Redeemer, brother and friend, may I know Thee more clearly, love Thee more dearly, follow Thee more nearly. Amen."
To know Him, love Him, and follow Him should form the essence of our days. This prayer of St. Richard of Chichester is a scriptural legacy he left us. Day by day, we grow in the knowledge of God, love Him, and follow Him. Here are the scriptural instructions the Lord revealed:
"Cease striving and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10) Rest in the Lord and observe. Hear His wise voice. Feel His comforting presence. See His might on your behalf. Then you will know Him.
"You must love Him with all your heart, soul, and might." (Deuteronomy 6:5 LB) Simple command.
"…come, follow Me."(Mathew 19:21) Sit at His feet a while...worship, pray, learn, then arise and follow Him.
Today is the day which the Lord has made. Know Him. Love Him. Follow Him.
