"In that day their burden will be lifted from your shoulders, their yoke from your neck; the yoke will be broken because you have grown so fat." Isaiah 10:27
In Isaiah's time farmers would yoke their oxen before they were fully grown. A wooden frame would sit on the shoulders of the animals to keep them in tandem as they worked. If the farmer wasn't alert, the oxen would grow too big for the yoke and it would break because of the increased strength and size of the oxen. Growth could happen unnoticed, even to the farmer.
Sometimes growth in our Christian life can be hard to detect but nevertheless over time we should see a difference. The "yoke" in our life might be a bad habit, a phobia or some other persistent problem. We might pray that God remove the "yoke" from us but instead of removing it God wants it broken by our increased spiritual growth.
As we grow spiritually by reading God's word, praying, fellowshipping and other spiritual disciplines, we should notice our motives becoming genuine, our attitudes becoming guileless and our perspective becoming godlier. We should even notice that some things which were problems for us in the past are no longer because we have grown "fat" and the "yoke" has broken.
