‘But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one stroke of a letter in the law to be dropped.’ (Luke 16:17 NRSV).
The law of religion and works was in effect until John the Baptist went into the desert places proclaiming that salvation is found in Jesus alone. Out with the old and in with a new message that assured freedom from the workings of the law. Yet Jesus said that it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for people to give up even one stroke of a letter of the worthless law they cling to. Amazing!
Are we clinging to what is worthless in Jesus’ eyes? Are we robbing ourselves of a freer way to live that is found not in old religious habits or compulsions that foster guilt or shame if we don’t do what we have always done? Freedom, Paul told the church in Galatia, is found not in the works of the law, but through faith in Jesus Christ. Only those who have a relationship built on faith in Christ are free, all others are under a yoke of slavery. The burdensome yoke of religious works and the rules and regulations associated with them, obstruct us from knowing Christ personally.
Instead we are to devote ourselves to the good news of the Kingdom of God and seek first our Savior Jesus Christ personally and intimately, daily and continuously. We do not have to enter this Kingdom through force or might, but instead by accepting Jesus and depending on His Spirit within us. This indeed is good news for those who are being strangled by religious law. Let us claim our rightful place, not as slaves to the law, but children of God (Galatians 4:7).
