Moving is a good time to throw things out, old clothes, broken toys, childhood memorabilia. When I've been preparing to move I find myself asking these questions: Do I really need this? Will I ever use it? And later I ask, why did I bring this? Some things, even though they are no longer useful, are hard to throw out. Sometimes it is like that with an attitude. We may realise that it is wrong or that it is holding us back from following the Lord more closely. Yet it is difficult to throw off because it has been part of our life for so long.
Nevertheless the writer to the Hebrews tells us to throw off everything that hinders, old grievances, broken dreams, even great memories from the past can hinder us if we allow them to keep us from growing spiritually.
The things that hinder our Christian walk vary greatly between Christians. For some it might be a major problem from the past that hinders. For others it might be the time wasted chatting on the phone.
Identifying and acknowledging the things that hinder us is the first step to throwing them off. The second step is repentance and receiving God's enabling grace which empowers us to live in freedom.
Moving was much easier when we had less things to move. Running the race that God has marked out for us will be easier when we throw off those things which hinder us.
