| | | | | | Simple Obedience - by Susan Ferguson Naaman's servants went to him and said, "My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, 'Wash and be cleansed'!" (2 Kings 5:13 NIV)
God uses ordinary people and simple things to accomplish the extraordinary. He doesn’t always work the way we expect, as seen in the life of Naaman, but His ways are always best.
Naaman was the commander of the Syrian army and a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy. A young Israeli girl, who served his wife, suggested he go to the prophet Elisha in Samaria for healing. With the king’s permission, Naaman left with his horses and chariots and arrived at Elisha’s doorstep. To his surprise, Elisha didn’t come out and meet him. Instead, Elisha sent a messenger, who told Naaman to go dip in the Jordan River seven times and his leprosy would be cured.
Naaman was furious. He thought Elisha would at least come out and greet him and perform a healing ritual. Naaman left angry, but his faithful servants came and urged him to follow Elisha’s instructions. And so he did. He dipped seven times in the Jordan River and was completely healed. Naaman was humbled and went back to Elisha and confessed that there was no other God in the world, except in Israel. Naaman learned a hard lesson in humility. His story shows us the importance of submission and obedience to God. Had he not obeyed Elisha’s simple command, he would have walked away a leper and not known the true God.
