“I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” (John 11: 25 KJV)
In John 11:21-23, Martha confronts Jesus with the words, “Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.” Jesus comforts her with these words, “Thy brother shall rise again.”
No one at that time could have anticipated the miraculous moment and event that Jesus’ words portrayed. The calling forth of Lazarus from the grave signaled to the Jews the divine and mighty power that Jesus was endowed with. It scared and mystified the chief priests and scribes, and they envisioned
losing their power to have the people look up to them as authority figures in the synagogues.
Which of them could bring anyone back to life, and more so to bring back one dead after four days? They were so terrified of such an outcome becoming widely known that they plotted the death of both Jesus and Lazarus.
However, we remember when Pilate asked Jesus if he knew that he had the power to crucify him or release him, Jesus replied, “Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above…” (John 19:11a KJV) So the Pharisees had no power to get rid of the Lord until such time as it was ordained for Him.
Christ can resurrect us from the darkness of our sins into His marvelous light, if we believe that He is from God His spirit will lead us to obey His commandments to love God and our neighbors as ourselves. We know that if we believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, our future will be like Lazarus, though dead, yet shall we live.
