So Abram said to Lot, "... Let's part company. If you go to the left, I'll go to the right; if you go to the right, I'll go to the left." Genesis 13:8-9
What an amazing attitude Abram had! He was older than Lot and therefore entitled to first choice, but instead he let Lot choose first. Abram didn't cling to the things of this world, knowing they were only temporal. He had the long term view in mind and believed that nothing could thwart God's purpose for his life. Nor was Abram worried about temporary inconveniences. The land that Lot left to Abram was rocky and hilly but Abram wasn't concerned.
Abram demonstrates the attitude that Paul encouraged in the Corinthian church. The Living Bible puts it this way, "Why not just accept mistreatment and leave it at that? It would be far more honouring to the Lord to let yourselves be cheated" (1 Corinthians 6:7). Abram let himself be cheated out of the best land because creating peace with Lot was more important than grasping for his rights. Furthermore he knew God's promises of future blessings wouldn't be thwarted by Lot.
Meanwhile our world is very focused on getting the best for ourselves and then hanging onto it. But we are not of this world and therefore we, "do not conform to the pattern of this world" (Romans 12:2). When I find myself getting annoyed by unfair situations, I pause and remember that God is in control of all the circumstances of my life and nothing can thwart his purposes for my life.
