| | | | | | Parable of the Yeast – Jennifer Woodley
“The Kingdom of God is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.” (Luke 13:21 NRSV)
There is an analogy waiting here to be explored. What if we took the leaven of God’s grace and the leaven of God’s love and allowed them to be mixed into the measure of our lives until these gifts were blended so well that we were living graceful and love-filled lives? I wonder how different our lives would become if such yeast was given room to grow in our thoughts, words, and actions. Could this be a challenge to discover the changes that may result in this coming New Year if we freely and willingly mixed this leaven into all of our lives?
What if our crusty, dry relationships were blended with the life-giving yeast of grace and love? What if we allowed grace to be our first response to the person who tests our patience? What gracious, loving act could we prepare for this person? And what if we eased up on ourselves by lowering expectations that drive us to a frantic pace and instead allowed grace and loving kindness to establish a gentler rhythm of being? What might that look like for you?
Grace and love, given by the Spirit, can be ours in full, flowing into the full measure of our lives as much as we desire it to. It is ours for the seeking, ours for the asking. Let’s talk to God about those graceless, loveless places in our lives, giving thanks that He can bring the changes we need. Jennifer is a freelance Christian writer.
