"A talebearer revealeth secrets; but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter," (Proverbs 11:13 KJV).
Did you ever confess you spilled the beans to a person whose confidence you failed to keep? Or, has anyone confessed to you they failed to keep your secrets? My guess is probably not. We'd rather people didn't know we've been untrustworthy. It takes an enormous amount of humility to own up to our own willingness to make someone look foolish, or sinful, or less than their best, simply for the delicious opportunity to reveal their secrets in a moment of weakness. The seriousness of tale bearing cannot be overstated (James 3:5-6 KJV). How much better to maintain a faithful spirit and keep confidences in faith and love.
If you've been the topic of a talebearer, here is my advice: let go of the offense and get on with your life. Ask God to grant you the grace to forgive, even if you never find out who knows what from whom. No one wants to admit they've been a talebearer, so don't lay awake at night ruminating about who it might be.
Here is something positive you can put into practice immediately: Maintain a faithful spirit toward yourself. Not everyone needs to know everything about you. There may be things you shouldn't share with anyone but God. Ask Him for discernment and discretion as to who to share your confidences with. Be wise; don't allow yourself to become the next tasty bit for a wagging tongue.
Dear God, we commit our cares and our concerns to you because you care for us. Grant us a faithful spirit that keeps confidence - not only for others, but for ourselves.
