The Candlestick Maker - Toni Babcock
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven," (Matthew 5:16 KJV).
How would you best define yourself as a Christian; the butcher, the baker, or the candlestick maker? The butcher is friendly, but prone to lose his cool. He doesn't like his logic questioned, and is wary of change. He wields the cleaver with speed and precision when confronting what appears to be the problem, but he doesn't always discern what the problem is, especially when it involves him.
The baker is a crafty fellow who is always cooking up new recipes to add indigestion and the nervous jitters to people who don't agree with him. He measures what he hears carefully, and enjoys throwing people off guard when they think they have him figured out. His heightened sensitivities tend to serve him well, but sometimes get him into trouble. He is usually the first to smell a bad egg, or a rummaging rat in the kitchen. The butcher and the baker have been known to come to blows, and point an accusing finger.
Then, there is the mysterious grace filled individual known as the candlestick maker. Oh, to be a giver of light like he! He wields a powerful influence in the stoniest of places, so that the hardest of hearts appear to melt like wax. It is very strange and wonderful, the influence the candlestick maker has on obstinate souls who now report "his reproofs are a kindness" and "his warnings are an excellent oil".
God would have us be the candlestick maker - the Christian who allows the light and the love of Christ to shine into a dark world. Who would you rather be?
