HARVEST REST- by Stephanie M. White
Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest. Exodus 34:21 NIV
Rest is found in Christ. It's the entire leaning of our being on Him. God spoke of rest repeatedly in His Word; He emphasized its importance. He even did so to the point of requiring one's life as the payment for ignoring the Sabbath rest.
The Sabbath is not merely a day off. The Sabbath represents resting in Christ and His finished work on the cross. The Sabbath was an observance of living life according to God's plan and not ours (Isaiah 58:13).
God's plan is for us to see the Word as our life and for us to abide in it. We're to rest in the Word and the faith it produces. Resting in Christ is trusting Him to do a work in us instead of trying to change ourselves.
The breaking of the Sabbath required death because there is no life outside of Christ. If we're not resting in Christ, then we're living a dead life (John 6:63) - a life of no Spiritual value.
During a harvest season we can be tempted to rest in ourselves. This temptation provokes us as we begin to see fruit and blessings. Our flesh loves to take credit; our flesh is prideful. We can be enticed to trust in ourselves more and God less if we're not focused on the truth. There will never be a time when we do not have to rest in Christ. Don't let the harvest give you a false sense of achievement. Rest in the Word; remain aware of your desperate need for Christ at all times.
