"I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on." Luke 21:1-4 (NIV)
Jesus watched the activity in the temple courtyard. Here rich, vibrant color and ostentatious wealth mingled with nondescript plainness and extreme poverty. Jesus heard the rustle of robes bustling around Him as the merchants conversed and aimlessly tossed spare coins into the treasury boxes. Their duty was done, they were gone. Pockets bulging with money hardly touched.
A woman came forward giving a meager contribution. Her garment of thin, drab cotton hung loosely, yet there was a sense of purpose in her step that drew Jesus' attention from her plain attire to her pleasant face. She placed two small coins into the box. A free will offering. Much given, nothing much left.
She had scrupulously kept aside those coins from her miniscule savings. She gave not because she had to, but because of her gratitude. This was a token of thanks, for God gave her far more than she could offer to Him. It had cost her much, but it was a willing sacrifice.
The widow's giving stands in contrast to the way most of us handle our money. When we consider giving a certain percentage of our income a great accomplishment, we resemble those who gave 'out of their wealth.' Here, Jesus was admiring generous and sacrificial giving. Can we consider increasing our giving - whether of money, time or talents - to a point beyond convenience or comfort?
