Being Holy by Karen Pourbabaee
"Be holy, because I am holy." 1 Peter 1:16 NAB
God has called us to be holy even in an ungodly world. I've often pondered the meaning of holiness…is it more than just our efforts at being good? Being pious? Here's a few thoughts.
God declares us holy. In 1 Peter 2:9 believers are described as a holy nation: "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of His own." The core meaning of holiness is to be set apart, derived from the Hebrew word for holiness, "qodesh". Holiness sets us apart from the world and unto God, forHis purposes. He envisions us as holy, which reminds me of Habakkuk 2:2-3: "…Write down the vision clearly upon tablets…For the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment…" God's holy nation will be fulfilled.
God calls us to be holy via 1 Peter 1:16. We are declared holy yet we must also become holy. It's holiness we're called to pursue and practice. God doesn't leave us clueless or helpless in the quest. He gives us the perfect human/divine model, His Son Jesus, and we become holy as we conform to His image. God offers us the living Word to instruct us and His Holy Spirit to guide us. For holiness is also a journey, not a static state. The definition of "be" sums it up: To grow, to become. The Father desires us to grow in holiness, to become holy. It is a vital, active, sanctifying process. It is our way.
Lord, I will press on to fulfillment of Your holy vison. I will answer Your call to be holy. Help me on my way. Amen.
