Training Your Mind – by KC Lemmer ‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.’ Romans 12:2 (NIV)
It was a gorgeous day when my friend took me out horse riding. As a fairly incompetent rider, but very keen, I was loving the experience of riding my tan mare with her two month old filly following. The ride was smooth, she (on the whole) followed my nudges and tugs on the reins. However, as soon as we hit the home stretch, she knew it. Excited at the familiar route, she took off. Wow – it was hard to slow her down while I bounced about on her back.
Our minds can be like this. A thought pattern starts, it seems harmless and tame. But sometimes those thought patterns get so engrained in us that we struggle to get out of them. It can reach a point when we feel like the thoughts are controlling us rather than us controlling them. Romans 12:2 says that we need to renew our minds. We need to learn to manage our mind. We need to surrender it to Him, seeking His wisdom and mercy. When our minds are renewed, we can then ‘test and approve what God’s will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will’. If our minds are caught in a sinful pattern of thoughts, meditating on God’s word and training our minds to think on godly things is crucial, that we might know God’s truth and freedom.
